How To Start Backpacking (And Why You Should Try It)

3 Comments / Hiking + Backpacking / By The Whimsical Woman

Backpacking is such a weird concept if you think about it.  You spend a bunch of money to basically become homeless for a chunk of time.  You don’t (typically) get to shower, use a toilet, or sometimes even eat hot food.  You sleep on the ground, you exert yourself to the point of exhaustion each …

Severe Dehydration on the Trail and a Trip to the ER

6 Comments / Hiking + Backpacking / By The Whimsical Woman

Well, I did it again friends! That’s right.  Another disastrous trip, back-to-back.  I would like to note that none of this is made up.  My life may seem like a joke, but it’s not.  It’s all definitely real. Some friends and I were backpacking Tuck and Robin Lakes.  Now what can go wrong in a …

When Backpacking (and Life) Goes Wrong

9 Comments / Hiking + Backpacking / By The Whimsical Woman

I have done my fair share of backpacking over this past year and have learned A LOT since my very first overnight trip.  Every experience has been an absolute blast, that I just can’t seem to get enough. That is, until this past weekend at Ancient Lakes in Eastern Washington. Now, Ancient Lakes is a …

Why You Shouldn’t Go To Iceland

4 Comments / Travel / By The Whimsical Woman

When you think “vacation”, I’m sure you are picturing blue skies, a blazing sun, sandy beaches, a Mai Tai in one hand, and if you’re me, a chicken wing in the other. So flying to an island south of the Arctic Circle, which starts with the word “ice” if you didn’t catch that, is out of the …

I accidentally came across this video tonight. I haven’t watched this clip in YEARS. It made me cry and I felt compelled to share it. No filters. No editing. Just a raw moment. *Turn volume down or get blasted by the wind.* As you could probably tell, Finn had a BLAST in his new Osprey Poco Plus carrier. We have been using the Ergobaby Omni 360 (which we also love) for hikes, but that carrier seems better for more casual outings. So it was time we upgraded! Happy first Father’s Day to my husband. The one who has never once made me the default parent and who always has been there for Finley and I every second of every day. We love you and are so lucky and thankful to be in your life. One of the few pictures from the last 8 months where I don’t have throw up covering me. Either way, I sure do love this boy and who I am today because of him. I know social media heavily filters the outdoors, and makes it look super romantic and glamorous quite often, but there’s another side to it. There’s LOTS of dirt, pain in many forms, bugs (and bug bites), and loads of side effects from the sometimes harsh elements. Before Owen and I became parents, we had a discussion about what we wanted our lives to look like after we had a child. And although we didn’t know all of the inner workings of having a baby, we knew we didn’t want to stay home and be intimidated by going out with a baby. *Even though it was definitely intimidating at first.* So we have really made it a point to go to sporting events, go on hikes, and take small trips just like we enjoyed doing before becoming parents. Check on your friends with freckles right now. Like literally go check their skin. #tickseason #isitamoleoratick #trickedme When I go backpacking, I don’t bring a stove. Long before I completed my first thru-hike, I heard about these stoveless backpackers and couldn’t wrap my mind around not eating hot food or drinking hot coffee while on trail! But then I tried it and realized the pros of not bringing a stove outweighed the cons for me. For example:
